This began as a research file on writers who argue that money is more than a store of value, and on inheritance as something handed on with an obligation attached. The reading kept opening onto questions that are genuinely unsettled, and where the primary sources say more than the summaries of them.
So the series follows four of those questions rather than surveying a field. Why money’s origin is still argued over. How a commercial bank produces the money it lends. Where a widely repeated sentence about money first appeared in print. And what actually happens to wealth across generations, which turns out to be a more interesting story than the proverb about it.
Every quotation read in the second voice was taken from a primary text or an open copy of one. Where something could not be verified, the series says so rather than smoothing it over. Several of those unresolved points are among the better parts.

Episode 01 · The Map
Here is something you have probably done without deciding to.
Picture three thousand dollars, arriving three ways. The first is your paycheck. The second is a tax refund. The third was left to you by someone who died. Same currency, same bank, and after a week, the same account. Most of us still treat them as three different things. The paycheck pays the bills. The refund feels like found money and goes on something we would not otherwise have bought. And the inheritance tends to sit, sometimes for years, because spending it feels like spending the person.
Every part of that is irrational by the textbook definition of money, which says a dollar is a dollar and carries no memory of where it came from. And yet nearly everyone does it, including the economists.
The sociologist Viviana Zelizer gave the behavior a name. Earmarking, in a book called The Social Meaning of Money, published in nineteen ninety-four. Her argument is that people sort money by where it came from and what it is for, and attach different rules to each pile, so a single currency ends up carrying many kinds of money inside it.
That is a small observation with a large question behind it. If money were the neutral instrument the textbook describes, earmarking would be a mistake we could train ourselves out of. It has proven remarkably hard to train out. Which raises the question this series follows: what is money, such that people behave this way around it?
Four episodes, and four questions worth the walk.
This one asks what money is and does, and why economists disagree about which of its jobs came first. The second asks where money physically comes from in a modern economy, and lets a central bank answer in its own words. The third follows a single phrase, "money is energy," back through a century of books to see who first wrote it down. And the fourth takes a statistic about inherited wealth that circulates widely in the wealth-management world, and traces it to its source.
None of these are settled. That is why they are interesting.
Start with the textbook, since the textbook is where the argument begins.
Money is conventionally defined by what it does. There are three jobs, sometimes four. It is a medium of exchange, so you can trade it for things. It is a unit of account, so prices and debts can be expressed in it. It is a store of value, so it holds purchasing power across time. Older texts add a fourth, a standard of deferred payment, meaning it settles obligations that come due later.
That list is accurate, and it is also oddly quiet on the interesting part. It describes the jobs without saying why any particular thing gets hired to do them, and it lays the four out as equal partners.
A substantial body of work argues they are not equal, and that the order matters. On this view the unit of account comes first and the rest follow. A medium of exchange needs a unit for prices to be quoted in. A store of value needs a scale for value to be measured on. The measuring stick has to exist before the other jobs are even coherent.
The oldest version of that thought is about twenty-three hundred years old. Aristotle, in Book Five of the Nicomachean Ethics, working out how exchange between genuinely different things is possible at all.
Money, then, as a standard, serves to reduce things to a common measure, so that equal amounts of each may be taken; for there would be no society if there were no exchange, and no exchange if there were no equality, and no equality if it were not possible to reduce things to a common measure.
There is a strong claim tucked into the middle of that sentence. No society if there were no exchange. Aristotle is treating the measuring function of money as load-bearing for the existence of a community, rather than as a convenience that makes shopping easier.
And he names the difficulty in the same breath. A house and a pair of shoes are not truly commensurable. There is no natural quantity of shoes that equals one house. Money makes them comparable by agreement rather than by discovery, which is why the Greek word for coin is nomisma, from nomos, meaning law or custom. Money is called money because a community agreed to call it that.
Twenty-three centuries later, that is still where the fault line runs.
On one side is the account most of us absorbed in school. Barter came first, it was awkward, and money was invented to smooth it out. On the other is a tradition running through a British banker named Alfred Mitchell-Innes, writing in nineteen thirteen, and the sociologist Geoffrey Ingham, writing in two thousand four, which holds that money began as credit. As a record of who owed what to whom, backed by whoever could enforce it. In that telling, coins arrive late and are a detail rather than the origin.
Both accounts have serious people behind them, and part of what makes the argument durable is that the two sides are answering slightly different questions. One is asking what could logically have happened. The other is asking what the historical record shows. Episode two picks that up.
A word about how this was put together, because it bears on how much weight to give it.
Every quotation you hear in the second voice was read in the original text or an open copy of it. Where something could not be verified, this series says so out loud rather than smoothing it over, and there are several such places. Some of them turned out to be the most interesting parts.

Episode 02 · Where Money Comes From
A bank approves a mortgage for four hundred thousand dollars. Where do the four hundred thousand dollars come from?
The familiar answer is that they come from savers. Depositors put money in, the bank keeps a fraction in reserve and lends the rest out, sitting in the middle as a pipe that moves existing money from people who have it to people who need it. If you took an economics class you probably met the mechanism by name: the money multiplier, where a deposit is lent and re-deposited and re-lent, multiplying through the system by a factor set by the reserve requirement.
It is a clean model, it was taught for decades, and it captures something true about how constrained banks feel. It is also a description that the Bank of England has since revised, in its own Quarterly Bulletin, first quarter of two thousand fourteen, in a paper by three economists from its Monetary Analysis Directorate.
This episode follows three questions. How a bank produces the money it lends. What limits that, given that a shortage of deposits turns out not to be the answer. And what your own bank balance is, considered as an object.
Here is the Bank of England describing what happens the moment a loan is made.
Whenever a bank makes a loan, it simultaneously creates a matching deposit in the borrower's bank account, thereby creating new money.
The weight of that sentence sits on one word. Simultaneously. There is no sequence in which the bank first goes looking for the money and then hands it over. It writes two numbers at the same instant. On one side of its balance sheet, an asset: your promise to repay four hundred thousand dollars. On the other, a liability: four hundred thousand dollars in your account, which the bank owes you on demand.
Before that instant the money did not exist anywhere. Nobody's balance fell so that yours could rise. The commercial bank made it by typing it, and it is money in every sense that counts, because you can buy a house with it.
The Bank of England is explicit that this runs the familiar model in reverse.
Rather than banks receiving deposits when households save and then lending them out, bank lending creates deposits.
And on the multiplier specifically.
In normal times, the central bank does not fix the amount of money in circulation, nor is central bank money multiplied up into more loans and deposits.
So where do reserves fit, if they are not raw material being multiplied?
Central bank reserves are a separate kind of money that only banks hold. They are the currency banks use with each other and with the central bank. When you pay someone who banks elsewhere, your bank settles with theirs in reserves. You never touch them and you cannot hold them. There are two circuits running side by side: the deposits that households and firms use, and the reserves that banks settle among themselves. The multiplier model blurs the two, treating reserves as a stock that gets lent out to the public, which is not a thing that can happen.
Which invites the obvious question. If a bank can make money by typing it, what stops any bank from typing more?
Several things, and none of them is a shortage of deposits.
Lending only pays if the loan is repaid. A bank that lends carelessly ends up holding a pile of promises from people who cannot pay, and those promises are its assets. Bad lending destroys a bank from the asset side, which is why credit standards exist.
Capital rules are the second limit. Regulators require a bank to fund part of its lending with its own shareholders' money, so losses reach the owners before they reach depositors. That puts a ceiling on lending relative to the cushion behind it.
The third is that a new deposit does not stay put. Your four hundred thousand goes to the seller of the house, who probably banks somewhere else, and now your bank has to settle that transfer in reserves it must obtain. Creating a deposit is easy. Watching it walk across the street to a competitor carries a cost.
And the fourth is the price of money. Central banks influence how much lending happens by setting interest rates, which changes how many people want a loan and how many of them look creditworthy. Monetary policy works on the demand for credit and on its price, rather than by rationing a fixed quantity of money.
Now the part that tends to sit with people longest.
If making a loan creates money, then repaying a loan destroys it.
When you make a mortgage payment, the deposit leaves your account and the loan balance shrinks by the same amount. An asset and a liability cancel on the bank's books, and that money is gone from the economy. It has not moved somewhere else. It has stopped existing.
So the quantity of money in a modern economy is largely a byproduct of how much borrowing is going on. During a credit boom, money is being manufactured. When households and firms pay debt down faster than they take it on, money is being extinguished, which is part of why the aftermath of a financial crisis feels like air leaving a room.
A distinction worth holding onto here, because these two ideas travel together and are not the same.
Everything described so far is accounting. It is how bank balance sheets work, it is uncontroversial across every school of economic thought, and since two thousand fourteen it carries a central bank's endorsement. There is no political position in it.
Sitting nearby is a separate set of claims, usually called Modern Monetary Theory, which begins from similar observations and goes on to argue that a government issuing its own floating currency faces no solvency constraint, and that the real limits on public spending are inflation and available resources rather than the ability to raise money. Those claims are contested. Most mainstream economists reject them, Paul Krugman, Kenneth Rogoff and Lawrence Summers among them, and they draw criticism from inside post-Keynesian economics too, notably from Thomas Palley.
The accounting is settled. The policy program is a live argument. Keeping them apart is most of what it takes to follow the public debate about deficits without getting lost.
Which leaves the last question. What is a bank balance?
It is not your money sitting in a vault. It is a debt the bank owes you, recorded as a liability on its balance sheet. You are a creditor of a private company. That is why deposit insurance exists, and it is why a bank run is better understood as creditors of a leveraged institution all trying to collect at once than as a crowd behaving irrationally.
Alfred Mitchell-Innes, the British banker from episode one, argued in nineteen thirteen that this was true of all money and always had been. That money is credit and nothing besides, a record of obligation, and that coins were a late technology laid over a much older system of accounting for debts. Watching a modern bank make a mortgage, it is hard to say he was far off.

Episode 03 · Money Is Energy: A Paper Trail
There is a sentence that turns up on the prosperity shelf and in the weekend workshop, usually offered as old wisdom. Money is energy.
This episode sets aside whether the claim is true, which is a question about metaphysics, and follows a smaller one that has an answer. Who wrote it down first?
It is a good question to practice on, because the method transfers to any quotation anyone ever hands you, and because the trail turns out to be more interesting than the sentence.
Start with the method, since that is the part worth keeping. Searching the open internet for a quotation mostly finds quotation websites, and those copy from each other, so a hundred results can be one source and ninety-nine reflections of it. The alternative is to search inside the books. Several archives hold scanned, machine-read copies of hundreds of thousands of published works, and you can search the text of the pages themselves. If a sentence is in a book, it surfaces. If it is not, that absence is information.
The usual story places the phrase in the American New Thought movement of the late eighteen hundreds. Mind cure, positive thinking, prosperity as a spiritual practice. The ancestor of most modern money-manifestation writing is Wallace Wattles, whose book The Science of Getting Rich appeared in nineteen ten.
The phrase is not in it. Wattles does not write about energy in that way at all. His vocabulary is Formless Substance and Thinking Stuff, and the word energy appears three times in the whole book, attached each time to Original Substance rather than to money.
Nor does it surface in Charles Fillmore's Prosperity, from nineteen thirty-six, or Ernest Holmes's Science of Mind, from nineteen twenty-six, or Catherine Ponder's Dynamic Laws of Prosperity, from nineteen sixty-two. The nearest thing in that tradition is a line from Myrtle Fillmore about turning the energy of your thought toward plenty, which is a claim about thought and leaves money out of it.
The earliest verified appearance in a widely read book is nineteen eighty-eight, and the author is someone the prosperity shelf rarely claims. Joseph Campbell, the mythologist, in The Power of Myth, on page two hundred and eighty-two.
All money is congealed energy. I think that that's the clue to how to transform your consciousness.
Two things worth noticing. It is real, and it is on the page. And look at what Campbell is doing with it. He is making a remark about consciousness inside a long conversation about myth. He is not making an economic claim, and he would likely have been startled to find the line quoted in a workshop about earning more.
There is a longer version in circulation. Money is congealed energy, and releasing it releases life's possibilities. That one comes from a different book, a posthumous collection edited by Diane Osbon in nineteen ninety-one, drawn from lectures Campbell gave in nineteen eighty-three. Both are genuinely Campbell. They are two different sentences, and once they merge into one, the trail behind them gets harder to follow.
The next case shows how that merging happens, and it happens without anyone meaning it to.
A widely shared quotation reads: since money is energy, our financial affairs tend to reflect how our life energy is moving. It is usually credited to Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization, from nineteen seventy-eight, one of the founding texts of modern visualization practice.
A full-text search of that first edition finds no such sentence. The book uses the word energy a hundred and seventeen times without once saying money is it.
The line is real, though. It comes from a later and less famous Gawain book, Creating True Prosperity, published in nineteen ninety-seven, on page two hundred and two. And it reads a little differently there.
Since money symbolizes energy, our financial affairs tend to reflect how our life energy is moving.
Symbolizes, where the circulating version says is. One verb, and the claim changes character entirely. A symbol is something a community assigns a meaning to, which is close to what Aristotle said about coins in episode one. Somewhere between the page and the poster, a metaphor firmed up into a statement about physics, and nobody had to intend that for it to happen.
One more, and this one is worth stating carefully. A quotation attributed to Kate Northrup's Money: A Love Story, from twenty thirteen, has her saying that money is simply energy and we made it up, so there is plenty to go around.
Her book is scanned and searchable, and the line is not in it. The phrase "money is simply energy" does appear in thirty-eight other titles, which is the signature of a common expression that drifted onto a name. So the fair thing to say is that the sentence is in wide circulation and the attribution to her does not hold.
Plenty of these check out exactly, which is worth saying just as plainly. Deepak Chopra, in Creating Affluence from nineteen ninety-three, does write that money is life energy we exchange for the service we provide, word for word, across every scanned edition. Jen Sincero says almost precisely what she is quoted as saying. And Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez, in Your Money or Your Life, gave the idea its most durable form, though usually with a qualifier that gets trimmed away in the retelling: money is just something you trade your life energy for.
Of the attributions in general circulation, two are exact, one has lost the word that softened it, one belongs to a phrase rather than a person, and one comes from a book no archive has digitized, so it cannot be checked either way. That spread is fairly ordinary for any sentence that has traveled this far.
Now the part of this story that deserves more attention than it gets, because there is a rigorous version of the money-and-energy idea, and it has been sitting in libraries since nineteen twenty-six.
Frederick Soddy won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in nineteen twenty-one for work on radioactive isotopes. He then spent much of the rest of his life writing about money, which his colleagues regarded as a waste of a good chemist.
His argument, in a book called Wealth, Virtual Wealth and Debt, runs like this. Real wealth is physical. Food, buildings, machines, fuel. It obeys thermodynamics, so it decays and wears out and gets used up. Debt is not physical. Debt is an accounting entry, and it grows at compound interest, which has no natural ceiling. So an economy runs two systems side by side, a physical one bound by entropy and a financial one that is not. Given enough time, the claims outgrow the things the claims are on.
That is a real argument about money and energy, and it can be tested in principle, which distinguishes it from the version in the workshop.
It should not be oversold either. Soddy was largely dismissed in his lifetime, and a nineteen fifty-six obituary in the journal Science recorded that many remembered him as a monetary crank. The economist Herman Daly, who did more than anyone to recover the work, wrote in nineteen eighty that Soddy overstated the importance of his own proposed reforms and laid too much at the door of the banking system, war included. Daly still called him a pioneer of a line of thinking that would one day be dominant, and ecological economics grew from that line.
So there are two traditions here that share a vocabulary and little else. One built a testable argument and waited eighty years for an audience. The other carried a resonant phrase forward without a citation attached, which is how most phrases travel.
The habit worth taking from this is small and it is generous. When a quotation moves you, go looking for the book and the page. Often you find it, and the surrounding paragraph is better than the fragment. Sometimes you find something else, and that turns out to be the more interesting story.

Episode 04 · The Proverb With a Decimal Point
Seventy percent of wealthy families lose the money by the second generation. Ninety percent lose it by the third. Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.
The figure appears in wealth management brochures, in family office presentations, in estate planning seminars and in a good many books about legacy. It is usually attributed to a specific study, and often to a specific book: Preparing Heirs, by Roy Williams and Vic Preisser, published in two thousand three.
Following it back is a genuinely interesting piece of detective work, and it opens onto a larger question about how numbers acquire authority. That is what this episode is about, along with what the data on inherited wealth does show, which is less tidy and more surprising than the proverb.
Three things to take from it. How to trace a statistic to its source. Why the question "how much wealth is inherited" has two defensible answers that differ by a factor of four. And what the federal estate tax in the United States reaches, which is narrower than most people expect.
The tracing was done properly by a psychologist named James Grubman, in the International Family Offices Journal, in twenty twenty-two.
The shirtsleeves proverb has little empirical validity other than its presumed ubiquity and its power as an antiquity adage, a saying that confirms a common belief simply because it is widely used.
Grubman followed the citations backward, and they converge on a single source. A book from nineteen eighty-seven by John Ward, called Keeping the Family Business Healthy.
What Ward studied was two hundred family manufacturing businesses in the state of Illinois, examined through public records, in the mid nineteen eighties.
And here is the detail that changes the meaning of the number. Ward's definition of failure was that majority ownership did not pass to the next generation of the family. That is what it measured. A company sold at a large profit counted as a failure by that definition. So did one that went public. So did a family that took the proceeds and did something else with their lives. Bankruptcy was never the measure, and household wealth was never tracked.
So a study of business succession, in one industry, in one American state, became a general law about the disappearance of family wealth. Nobody had to be careless for that to happen. A finding gets summarized, the summary gets quoted, the quotation loses its qualifier, and thirty years later the number arrives fully formed with no visible seams.
There is a further wrinkle. Williams and Preisser wrote that their seventy percent figure had been independently confirmed by research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and by The Economist. Grubman went looking for both. The MIT reference turns out to be an unrelated article from nineteen eighty-three, and The Economist citation is a single line in a feature from two thousand one that quotes Adam Smith.
They did conduct research of their own, over twenty years, with somewhere between one thousand and two and a half thousand families. Its methodology has not been published and its data has not been released for outside review. It may well be careful work. Nobody outside the authors has been in a position to evaluate it.
And a study from twenty eleven that looked at business families rather than individual businesses found considerable longevity and success across generations, which points the other way.
Why does the proverb persist through all of that? Partly because versions of it exist in many cultures, and that ubiquity feels like corroboration. There is an Italian version about stables to stars to stables, a Scottish one about the father who buys, the son who builds and the grandson who sells, and a Chinese one about wealth not surviving three generations. What the spread actually shows is that people everywhere worry about their grandchildren, which is a different and rather more moving fact.
So what does the evidence say about inherited wealth? The honest picture is stranger than the proverb.
Thomas Piketty's work traces the share of wealth coming from inheritance across two centuries, and the shape is a U. In nineteenth century France, inheritance flows ran at twenty to twenty-five percent of national income. That collapsed to four or five percent by the nineteen fifties and sixties, because two world wars and the inflation and taxation that followed destroyed an enormous amount of old capital. Since the nineteen eighties it has been climbing back, to somewhere between eight and twelve percent in France, Britain and Germany.
Inherited wealth was not abolished by modernity. It was interrupted by catastrophe, and it has been returning since.
Here is the part that is most useful to carry around. Ask an economist what share of American wealth is inherited rather than earned and saved, and you can get two very different answers.
Laurence Kotlikoff and Lawrence Summers, in nineteen eighty-one, said roughly eighty percent. Franco Modigliani, disputing them through the nineteen eighties, said roughly twenty percent.
They were not working from different data. They were counting differently. Suppose your father leaves you a hundred thousand dollars, and thirty years later it has grown to four hundred thousand. Is the additional three hundred thousand inherited wealth, or wealth you accumulated? Kotlikoff and Summers count it as inherited, since without the bequest none of it exists. Modigliani counts it as accumulated, since the growth came from choices you made.
Both positions are defensible, and neither is a simple fact about the world. Which means a number like that carries a definition inside it, and knowing the definition is most of knowing what the number says.
One more piece of the picture, because it tends to run against expectation.
The federal estate tax in the United States reaches very few estates. The Tax Policy Center estimates that fewer than two tenths of one percent of deaths in a given year result in a taxable estate. In the Internal Revenue Service's own figures, estate tax returns filed fell from nine thousand and twenty-four for people who died in twenty twenty-three, to seven thousand one hundred and ninety-five for twenty twenty-four. The filing threshold for a twenty twenty-three death was twelve point nine two million dollars per person. That threshold is indexed and moves every year, so treat any figure you hear as belonging to its tax year rather than to today.
Both sides of the political argument cite that small percentage, which is part of what makes it interesting. Opponents read it as a tax touching so few estates that it cannot justify its compliance burden. Defenders read it as a tax that could be made considerably more redistributive at little political cost.
Finish at the top of the distribution, where a similar gap between a phrase and its contents opens up.
The Giving Pledge was founded in twenty ten by Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. Signatories promise to give the majority of their wealth to charity in their lifetime or in their wills. It is often discussed as though it were binding. The founding announcement is clear that it is not.
The pledge is a moral commitment to give, not a legal contract, and it does not involve pooling money or supporting a particular set of causes or organizations.
The Institute for Policy Studies looked at fifteen years of it, in a report published in July of twenty twenty-five. Of the fifty-seven original American signatories from twenty ten, thirty-two are still billionaires, and their combined wealth has grown by two hundred and eighty-three percent since they signed. They have given an estimated two hundred and six billion dollars, of which about eighty percent went into private foundations rather than to organizations doing the work.
In fairness, and this belongs in the same breath, the Institute for Policy Studies is an advocacy organization, and the Giving Pledge responded that the analysis leaves out significant forms of charitable giving and is misleading. That response is on the record and deserves weighing rather than waving away.
What connects the proverb and the pledge is not that either is a fraud. It is that a phrase can travel much further than the thing it originally described, and that following it home is usually rewarding.
So when a number about money catches your attention, the useful questions are gentle ones. What exactly was counted, since "failure" meant one specific thing in Illinois in nineteen eighty-seven. What definition is folded inside it, since that is where the eighty and the twenty came from. And is the study findable, since the ones that are tend to be more interesting than their summaries.
That closes the series. Four questions, four trails, and in every case the source turned out to hold more than the shorthand did. Which is a reasonable thing to expect of a source, and a good reason to go and read one.
